Al Burda Awards 2013, Abu Dhabi, UAE : UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan attended on Sunday 27th January 2013 the Al Burda Awards ceremony in Abu Dhabi in celebration of the anniversary of birthday of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). Also present at the event were Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Owais, Director General of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowment Dr Mohammed Matar Al Kaabi, senior officials and a number of ambassadors including the Libyan Ambassador to the UAE, Dr Aref Ali Nayed. During the ceremony, a number of poems on the anniversary were read, including a poem entitled 'The Prophet of Peace', written by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Sheikh Abdullah honoured winners of Al Burda Award in its three categories; poetry, Arabic calligraphy and Islamic illumination. Mawlid Procession in Tripoli, Libya : Tripolitanians converged at Martyrs' Square in Tripoli to celebrate the Mawlid of the Beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). It was a beautifully blessed day. The various processions recited and sang odes dedicated to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), visiting several of the main mosques and madrasas in the Old Madina. These photos here capture scenes at Martyrs' Square and at the Uthman Pasha Madrasa, where over 1,000 plates of wonderfully cooked meat with pasta were served to all guests, young or old, rich or poor. The whole day was a venerable manifestation of everything that our religion teaches: love, piety, remembrance, service, adab, charity, and compassion. Remarkable faces, striking traditional attires, and hearts full of love for the Prophet. I have added perhaps far too many photos but a lot of people asked me for photos of today's event so I have put everything into one folder. I hope it captures something of the atmosphere experienced today. May this noble tradition of the Mawlid never vanish from this land in the face of whatever threats extremists Salafists may throw at its population. All photos © Sohail Nakhooda

Bustan Madihin Concert at Burj Khalifa, Dubai : The Libyan traditional ensemble, Bustan Al-Madihin, led by Sheikh Bahloul Al-Arqoub, performed a concert at the Burj Khalifa steps (next to Dubai Mall) in Dubai on Saturday 1st December 2012. Sharjah International Book Fair 2012 : The Sharjah International Book Fair opened on 7th November 2012 bringing leading Arab publishers and international authors to showcase their latest works. On display were 4,000 rare original manuscripts, folders, books, encyclopedias and maps donated by Dr Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi, ruler of Sharjah, to the Institute for the Advancement of Scientific Research, also known as the Egyptian Scientific Complex and Science Academy in Cairo, the oldest scientific academy in Egypt, which was burned down last year. World Energy Forum 2012 Opening Day, Dubai : The World Energy Forum 2012 was officially opened on Monday by Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Gurji Mosque, Old Madina, Tripoli : I woke up this morning (Monday 27th August 2012) to the devastating news that even the Gurji Mosque in the Old Madina of Tripoli was damaged last night by a senseless Wahhabi mob. It was a landmark site in the Old Madina and a magnificent, serene and dignified mosque from the Karamanli period. These photos were taken during a recent visit to Tripoli. I am honored to have had a chance to see them in their full glory because history cannot be replaced. May these pictures serve as a reminder to Libyans of what their country was once like so that it does not become erased from their cultural and religious memory. All photos: © Sohail Nakhooda

Libyan Scholar Sheikh Dr Umar Mawlud : Sheikh Dr Umar Al-Mawlud, Libya's foremost living religious scholar and head of the new Rabita Al-Ulema Al-Libya, delivers a lecture on the history of religious learning in Libya from 1950s until the beginning of the Libyan revolution in 2011. The lecture was given on 15th February 2012 at the Historical Institute in Tripoli, Libya. Sheikh Mawlud hails from Zawiya in Libya and teaches Shariah and Islamic Law (Maliki). Etihad Airways Inaugural Flight Reception - Tripoli, Libya : Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, operated its maiden flight from Abu Dhabi to Tripoli on Tuesday, the airline's first new destination of 2012. The service, which will operate three times a week, is the only direct commercial flight between the UAE and Libya's capital city. Inaugural flight EY687 departed Abu Dhabi at 07:45am and touched down at 12:15pm, local time. On board the two class Airbus A330 were UAE Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs Dr Anwar Gargash, former UAE ambassador to Libya Saeed Obaid al Kaabi, current ambassador Sultan Rashid Al Kaytoub and UAE Head of Economic Affairs Jassim Mohamed Al Qassimi. Etihad Airways Chief Operating Officer Richard Hill piloted the aircraft. Other members of Etihad Airways staff included Senior Vice President Government and Aeropolitical Affairs Khaled Gaith al Mehairbi, Senior Vice President Executive Affairs and Corporate Security Hasan al Hammadi and Vice President UAE Sales Hareb Mubarak al Muhairy. Prominent UAE businessmen were also on the flight. Etihad Airways' President and Chief Executive Officer James Hogan said: "We are delighted to launch this service to Tripoli. Libya is a beautiful country that over the coming months and years will have much to offer both business and leisure travelers. Tripoli is Etihad Airways' fifth African destination and marks the first time these two Arab capitals have been commercially linked by air." Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, underlined the significance of the launch of Etihad Airways flights to Tripoli: "This is a further step in the development of the relationship between the United Arab Emirates and Libya. Direct flights will contribute profoundly to the development of trade, investment and tourism. "The new Libya is taking its rightful place among the prosperous nations of northern Africa and the Mediterranean. I have noted with great satisfaction that UAE companies are increasingly turning their attention to Libya for opportunities to cooperate, invest and do business. This is a clear sign of the positive future our business community sees for this country. Etihad Airways is a leading example of this." UAE Ambassador to Libya Sultan Rashid Al Kaytoub said: "There is no doubt that the new Etihad Airways route between the two Arabian capitals is a result of joint cooperation between the two countries in civil aviation. "Air transport has become imperative in the rise of economies, therefore the new Etihad Airways route to Libya's capital Tripoli will open up prospects for more trade, cooperation and investment. It will also enhance tourism between the UAE and Libya. "We look forward to more partnerships and strategic cooperation, and the to the operation of regular flights between different cities of the UAE and Libya to serve the interests of the two brotherly countries and peoples." Dr Aref Ali Nayed, Ambassador of Libya to the United Arab Emirates, said: "The United Arab Emirates has been steadfast in its support for the Libyan people. Since the beginning of the uprising, the UAE has provided humanitarian, diplomatic and political assistance in all critical areas, ranging from medical aid to education. "It is vital, therefore, that this close cooperation between the two countries is strengthened through the building of robust channels of communication. The inauguration of the first commercial flights by Etihad Airways between Abu Dhabi and Tripoli will enable citizens of both countries to travel, develop commerce and move cargo. Friends of Libya's Children - Charity Football Match : The Chairman of the National Transitional Council (NTC) of Libya, Sheikh Mustafa Abdul Jalil, made a guest appearance at a charity football match at Al Ahli stadium in Dubai for the charity organization 'Friends of Libya's Children' Tuesday 8th November, 2011. The charity organization hosted the fundraising event at the Al Ahli football club under the supervision of the UAE Red Crescent. Liberation Celebration - Embassy of Libya in the UAE : [Dubai, Friday 28th October 2011] Libyan expatriates living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) gathered in Dubai this Friday to celebrate the liberation of Libya. The event, organized by the Embassy of Libya in the UAE, brought together almost 1,000 Libyans from various parts of the Emirates and also from neighbouring Gulf countries. The event began with the Libyan National Anthem and a recitation of the Qur’an by Sheikh Ahmad Dukali, Libya’s foremost Qur’an reciter. Sheikh Dukali also gave a moving spiritual exhortation on the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation and respect for the sanctity of human dignity, life and property in Islam. Professor Dr Mustafa Abu Shagur, representing the Libyan community in the UAE, expressed a compelling vision of a free and democratic Libya; a video compiled by Libyan youth conveying a message of national unity was screened, followed by traditional Libyan songs, and poetry by Abdelmonim Flaileeh encapsulating a message of hope and progress. The Libyan Ambassador of the UAE, Dr Aref Ali Nayed, said: “It was utter joy to be together as a community as we celebrate the liberation of our country from 42 years of tyranny; the sacrifices of our people have been remarkable and this occasion is an opportunity for us to honour our martyrs and those who have been injured and dispossessed and to look forward with faith, hope and love to building a Libya that is filled with dignity, compassion and freedom.” All photos © Sohail Nakhooda. Libyan Consulate Opening Ceremony, Dubai : The Libyan Consulate in Dubai formally re-opened on Friday 19th August 2011, under the authority now of the National Transitional Council of Libya. The event was hosted by Dr Aref Nayed, the new Libyan Ambassador to the UAE and the taraweeh prayer was led by Sheikh Dukali Mohamed Alalem, Libya's foremost Qur'an reciter. A Veil of Colours: A Visual Portrait of the Hijab : I recently attended the Nursi International Studies Conference in Istanbul and was struck by the sheer diversity of hijab colours that the women adorned. I was determined to capture it in a visual feature, not with the aim of being a mindless voyeur but to somehow explore through a compelling visual medium, and as respectfully as possible, the hijab as a symbolic nexus of faith, dignity, femininity and beauty. The dominant media discourse, of Hollywood, or the rhetoric of those such as Ayaan Hirsi Ali or Wafa Sultan, or the second rate and rather lamentable books (even if best sellers in everywhere international airport bookstores) of Jean Sasson — all thrive on unfortunately highlighting extreme cases and then projecting them as stereotypes upon every Muslim woman on the planet. What they have done, effectively, is to rob the Muslim woman the ability or the space to express the profundity of their faith and their spiritual and religious choices in their own terms. As a designer it was refreshing to see such excellent examples of sartorial good taste and a dazzling array of colours and patterns—from floral to even variations on the Hermès patterns—yet exhibiting perfect balance of colour and texture, whether in contrast or in complement.
